sih identifies regional health issues
CARBONDALE (WSIL) — On Wednesday May 1, Southern Illinois Healthcare presented its triennial Community Health Needs Assessment.
The health care system teamed up with other locals leaders in the industry to identify health problems and ways to help solve them. Some of those issues include: higher-than-average cancer rates, tobacco use, and barriers to health care.
Another area of concern is obesity: nearly 68% of adults living in Perry, Franklin, Jackson, Union, Williamson, Saline and Johnson counties are considered overweight or obese. Those seven counties are the ones that SIH focuses on.

rural planning workshop
CARBONDALE — SIH, Jackson County Health Department, City of Carbondale and Active Transportation Alliance joined together to host a Rural Planning Workshop on April 24, 2019. Rural communities and non-profit organizations were also awarded “Rural Healthy Places Seed Grants” to improve their built environment. Grant recipients will be installing crosswalks, nature trails, safe pedestrian crossing signage, upgrading playgrounds, establishing safe bicycling and walking programs and working on community gardens. We appreciate their commitment to improving the health of those living in southern Illinois!
"Rural Healthy Places Seed Grants" were awared to Tamaroa Community Center, City of Marion, City of Pinckneyville, Washington Street Garden, City of Carterville, Elverado Primary School, Murphysboro Park District, Village of Vergennes and Green Earth, Inc.
