2021 camp beta:
let’s connected!
Camp BETA is for boys and girls ages 6-17 with Type 1 Diabetes. Due to COVID 19 the 4th annual Camp BETA was held virtually on November 13 & 14, 2021. November is National Diabetes Awareness month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day!
Every Camper received a BETA in a BOX filled with items for the camp activities and other goodies. Volunteers, Diabetes Resource Team and SIU Dietetic students offered fun and educational activities such as food bingo, decorating pumpkins, carb counting, Jeopardy, and playdough Charades and more….
The first day ended with a scavenger hunt as well as information on Sir Fedrick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin 100 years ago in 1921. The second day ended with a lesson on making Friendship bracelets and keeping connected.
Camp BETA is a collaboration between Southern Illinois Healthcare, the Diabetes Today Resource Team and the SIU Touch of Nature Environmental Center with sponsorship from the Carbondale Lions and Foresight Energy among others. The camp's continued success can be attributed to the hard work of many community members, parents, students, nurses, dietitians and volunteers. Tentative plans will be made for Camp BETA in person 2022 at SIU Touch of Nature.
